Soulardarity
Clean Energy/Social Justice/Environmental Justice
Soulardarity provides support to cope with an unjust energy system while creating infrastructure for a new, sustainable, and just energy system for all! We exist to create an equitable shift to a just, sustainable energy system for all because of the ways that BIPOC and low-income communities are impacted by an unjust energy system. We provide support to cope with an unjust energy system by organizing communities and delivering education and resources, and create infrastructure for a new, sustainable, and just energy system by installing solar powered streetlights, decreasing dependence on fossil fuels, and facilitating training for sustainability. Soulardarity's story began in 2011 when the monopolized energy company came into Highland Park, MI and repossessed over 1,300 residential street lights to settle a debt with the city, leaving residents in the dark literally and figuratively. Soulardarity began with the goal of bringing them back but making them community owned and solar powered, so companies cannot come and repossess them ever again. Since that time, Soulardarity has blossomed and grown into a people organizing nonprofit that focuses not just on installing street lights (27 installed to date with 50 more coming in spring of 2026, but educating residents, getting involved in legal intervention, providing home repair, weatherization , and solar, paying utility bills, and much more. A few words to convince you?
We think that an opportunity to share what we do with a larger audience is one we need to jump at! When we do work at a grassroots level, it can be difficult to remove yourself from the "weeds" and be able to go bigger in terms of audience. We want to continue to interact with more folks that can help us achieve Soulardarity's mission!
