Comfort Cases is dedicated to providing dignity and hope to youth entering the foster care system. Founded in 2013 by Rob Scheer, who himself experienced the foster care system as a child, the charity aims to eliminate a common but heartbreaking practice: children being given trash bags to carry their belongings when they enter foster care.

Mission
Comfort Cases provides backpacks or duffel bags filled with essential items to foster children, so they can have a sense of dignity and care during such a difficult transition. Since its founding, more than 260,000 Comfort cases backbacks have been given to youth entering the foster care system in every state in the US, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom.

Each “Comfort Case” typically includes items such as:

Pajamas
Toothbrushes and toothpaste
Shampoo, conditioner, and soap
A blanket
A stuffed animal for comfort
Journals, crayons, and coloring books for creative expression

Palomacy Pigeon & Dove Adoptions is a volunteer-powered, donation-funded foster-based nonprofit rescue saving the lives of domestic (unreleasable) birds that are lost, injured, displaced & abandoned. We provide rescue, foster care, avian vet treatment and adoption services in Northern California as well as 24/7/365 care coaching, referrals, advocacy and education nationwide via our online Help Group and website resources. Palomacy’s foster volunteers care for a caseload of approximately 270 birds at any given time and are the heart and soul of the rescue.

The various causes of hair loss in children don’t result in just physical distress. The change in their appearance can drastically undermine their self-image and sabotage their self-esteem. To help heal the pain of these struggles, Certified Cosmetic Therapist Jeffrey Paul founded Wigs For Kids, a non-profit hair donation organization that has been serving children experiencing medical hair loss since 1981.

Wigs For Kids is a cooperative effort among Certified Service Providers throughout North America who share a common goal. “Children shouldn’t have to worry about how they look, especially when they’re in the middle of a health crisis,” says Jeffrey Paul. “We want to give these kids the opportunity to feel good about themselves again.”

The cost of the hair replacement systems Wigs For Kids provides is approximately $1,800. “These are custom-made hair replacements,” says Jeffrey Paul. “Each prosthesis is hand-tied and is made completely from human hair. We make sure they look just like a child’s own hair.”

“They won’t come off on the baseball field or in the playground,” he adds. “Kids can count on them. And because kids look just the way they did before, they feel better about themselves. They look in the mirror and their eyes light up. To see that light in their eyes – that’s priceless.”

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a severe multisystem disease that usually occurs after an infection but can also be triggered by other factors. Some patients with Post-COVID-Syndrome suffer from ME/CFS. It is the last major disease that has unfortunately been little researched to date. In Germany, there are over 650,000 ME/CFS patients (over 40 million worldwide), approx. 40% of whom have ME/CFS after Long COVID. The patients also include approx. 80,000 children and adolescents in Germany. 

Patients have a very low quality of life and often a high degree of disability (two thirds are unable to work). To date, there is no causal treatment. So far, there has been too little public funding for research and, accordingly, little research into this disease, which has been known for over 60 years.
