Fourth Trimester

Sarah Trott

Fourth Trimester is a top Parenting podcast that prepares families for a healthier, more supported postpartum experience through expert conversations and practical guidance for the first months after birth. It’s hosted by Sarah Trott, a new mama dedicated to finding and sharing the best resources that empower parents to take care of themselves and their families, and by Esther Gallagher, a long-time doula and professional in all things postpartum.

Episode

In this episode, we explore birth center vs hospital birth, and what parents should know before deciding where to welcome their baby. Our guests are Certified Nurse Midwife Nancy Myrick, cofounder of the San Francisco Birth Center, and Monica Levine, president of the San Francisco Birth Center Foundation. Nancy brings more than three decades of experience supporting births across home, hospital, and birth center settings.

We discuss what birth center care actually looks like, how midwife-led care differs from hospital birth, and what research says about outcomes for low-risk pregnancies.

For this episode, we are participating Podcasthon, a global initiative highlighting nonprofits making a meaningful impact, and we’re honored to spotlight the work of the San Francisco Birth Center Foundation.

San Francisco Birth Center Foundation

We have a vision, that all birthing families feel safe, trusted, and celebrated in their care and that community centered midwifery is available for generations to come. At San Francisco Birth Center, we have been ensuring this choice by way of midwifery before, during and after birth, since 2016. In early 2023, San Francisco Birth Center deepened our commitment to reproductive choice and access by founding the San Francisco Birth Center Foundation (SFBC-F). It’s quite simple: midwifery care is high-quality, value-based care that saves lives and money. So why shouldn’t everybody be able to make this choice for their family, regardless of the size of their bank account, their sexual orientation, or the color of their skin? SFBC-F was created to ensure that in the San Francisco Bay Area, all birthing people can have access to a midwife and the personalized care before, during and after birth, that comes with choosing a birth center. Our programs provide a support system for the birth center and the broader field of midwifery that educates and empowers practitioners, honors cultural differences, cares for patients, and invites all community members in.
