Kingdom: Animalia - A Zoology Podcast for Kids

Devon Devon

This is a for kids (and adults) by kids (and chickadees) animal podcast. In every regular episode, your host, Devon, and podcast-overthrowal-plotting chickadee co-hosts, Chet and Cap, will dive into all the facts about one species of animal with jokes, fun facts, and quizzes along the way. Every third-ish episode is our game show, Animalia Fake!, where there are three rounds, each with four outrageous animal facts, one of those facts is so outrageous it’s an Animalia Fake (it’s not true), and you have to guess which it is.

You can send in questions and episode suggestions to animals@kingdomanimaliapod.com, and our website is https://kingdomanimaliapod.com/animals. So what are you waiting for? Let’s explore this amazing Kingdom: Animalia.

What should you feed budgies? Does Houdini have some feathered competition? Why should you adopt pets instead of buying them? What things on the market for budgies should you actually avoid? Today, on the first-ever KA interview episode, Devon, Chet, and Cap welcome on Amy Yee, volunteer at Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue (where Devon adopted Budgly and Rex), to talk about everything there is to know about pet budgerigars, Melopsittacus undulatus, and some other pet birds.

This episode is in part for Podcasthon, an initiative in which 1,300+ podcasts are doing an episode that educates listeners about a nonprofit of their choice. I chose to highlight Mickaboo, a bird rescue based in California. You can find an overview of what they do and donate if you want to support their mission at https://podcasthon.org/charities/mickaboo. If you do donate, please email me at animals@kingdomanimaliapod.com! I’d love to hear that I’m making an impact.

This is the third part of the Budgerigar. For the first and second parts (on wild budgies), go to the previous episodes in the feed.

You can send in questions, comments, episode suggestions, or verification that I’m not just talking into the void and all of the download numbers are from Chet and Cap (seriously, though, it means a lot) to animals@kingdomanimaliapod.com or at kingdomanimaliapod.com/contact, and my website is kingdomanimaliapod.com/animals.

Until next time, keep exploring this amazing Kingdom: Animalia.

Mickaboo

Mickaboo is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization (FEIN 94-3286344) founded in 1996 in Northern California. Most of our volunteers and foster birds live in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento Valley. We are dedicated to rescuing companion birds (parrot-type and other commonly domesticated birds) who have been neglected, abused, injured or surrendered to us. Our goals are: * To ensure that birds in our care will have a safe, loving environment for life. * To educate bird owners on the most current standard of care, so that the medical, emotional, and dietary needs of their birds will be met. At Mickaboo, our underlying principle is that Every Bird Gets An Equal Chance. Once a bird is in our care, we provide all the medical and supportive care that s/he requires. We do not "triage" birds or spend more money on large species than small. We only euthanize a bird when s/he is suffering without the possibility of recovery. We provide hospice care for terminally ill birds who are not suffering.
