Welcome to another episode of the Women in the Middle® Podcast!

Wildlife rehabilitation is the focus for this special Podcasthon episode. Podcasthon is when hosts around the world are featuring charities simultaneously during the same week.

Born and raised in Argyle, Nova Scotia, Hope Swinimer spent most of her time outdoors as a child enjoying everything the natural world had to offer. She knew that she wanted to work with animals in some capacity, and after missing the ocean terribly while attending college, that she wanted to be near the ocean.

While working at Dartmouth Veterinary Hospital as a manager, Hope took in her first rehab animal in 1995—a robin that had been attacked by a cat. Researching how to care for the bird inspired her to learn more about injured wildlife, and as her knowledge grew, colleagues began sending wildlife-related calls her way.

Later that year, she became certified in Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation from the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Association. Hope considered her options and decided to really dig in and committed to starting a wildlife rehabilitation centre “at home.”

With just a few cages in the backyard and a room in her house as a nursery, Hope rehabbed about 40 animals in her first year. In 1997, moved to Seaforth Nova scotia where she received her Rehabilitator Permit. It was the perfect location for a rehab.

You’re going to love hearing Hope’s story, which is really all about trusting your instinct about your next best step along the road to creating your most fulfilling and meaningful love.

Please enjoy this episode!

Hope for Wildlife

Hope for Wildlife is a charitable wildlife rehabilitation and education organization located in Seaforth, Nova Scotia. Since 1997, we have rescued, rehabilitated, and released over 90,000 injured and orphaned wild animals representing over 250 species. In addition to the ongoing provision of care we offer, Hope for Wildlife aims to connect people to wildlife in a positive way through knowledge and understanding. Every year, we respond to over 40,000 calls, texts and emails. We welcome thousands of visitors to our facilities for tours, give hundreds of offsite educational presentations to community and school groups, and collect a wide range of data from animals treated at our rehabilitation center. Connecting people to wildlife in a positive way through knowledge and understanding, Hope for Wildlife believes that education through rehabilitation is the key to a sustainable future. OUR GOALS Our mission comprises three very important goals: 1. Rescue, rehabilitate, and release back into the wild injured and orphaned wildlife. Since 1997, we have rehabilitated and released over 90,000 injured and orphaned wild animals representing over 250 species. Animals we treat receive food, medicine, shelter, and whatever else is needed to ensure a successful return to the wild. 2. Educate others about the importance of conserving wild animals and the ecosystems that sustain them. Every year, we assist over 40,000 callers, texts and emails and welcome thousands of visitors to our facilities for tours, and give hundreds of offsite presentations to community and school groups. 3. Research and develop the knowledge and understanding necessary for the conservation and management of wildlife. We collect a wide range of data from animals treated at our rehabilitation centre, which provides valuable insight into the health of local populations. Our work also offers opportunities to learn about the protection of various species in complex and continually changing biological, social, and political environments.
